Welcome to EYFS Class Page

Welcome to the Nursery class page where we will provide parents and carers with lots of information to help your child in their early stages of development.

Our Nursery Teacher is Miss Mills and our Nursery Teaching Assistant is Miss Tinker. You will also meet our High Level Teaching Assistant who is Mrs Sheffield. We are a friendly team who are all highly experienced.

We are excited to spend time getting to know you and your child throughout their Nursery journey at Spindle Point. We provide lots of fun activities and plenty of opportunities to learn through play, which will enable your child to develop the skills they need to become lifelong learners. We provide a safe and engaging environment where your child will be able to flourish into their own individual.

As a school, we promote Character Education which stresses the importance of helping children to learn and practise the behaviours that reflect ethical values. It helps them to become conscious to do the right thing. We do this through class discussions, demonstrating the behaviours and then praising the children with specific stickers when they display these behaviours.

We have regular communication between us and parents and carers through Tapestry. This is a great way to share all your child’s learning experiences in Nursery, as well as at home. We work well as a team in the Nursery and we work with all parents and carers to make sure your child is ‘school ready’ by the time they leave us in Nursery.

We are always busy in Nursery and some important days to remember are:
On a Monday we ask for snack money to be sent in using the plastic wallets provided. This helps to pay for the children’s milk, fruit and also the baking we do throughout the year.
On a Wednesday we have a hot snack and we usually have toast.
On a Thursday we go into the hall and take part in activities where we can use and develop our gross motor skills. These include dancing with ribbons, whole-body movements, ball skills and obstacle courses. We also set a fun homework activity on this day for the children to complete during the week.
On a Friday we change our library books. The children are able to choose their own book to share with their family at home over the week.

The nursery takes part in lots of fun events throughout the year. Some of these include the pantomime, Christmas markets, pancake eating, World Book Day, visitors into the Nursery, trips outside of the Nursery and so much more!

The Early Years Curriculum

In September 2020, Spindle Point Primary School became an Early Adopter of the revised EYFS framework – Please see the parent information letter below as to what this means for our curriculum.

The Early Year’s Curriculum is taught in the Nursery and Reception classes. In Nursery, the Early Year’s Curriculum follows a two-year rolling programme to ensure that children who remain in the setting for five terms experience a rich and diverse curriculum. Each topic is presented as a learning challenge question to generate further questioning and discussion which then leads their learning direction and captures the children’s interests.

It closely matches the Development Matters document: Development Matters EYFS PDF

We know that children learn through a wide range of experiences that they can freely access throughout the day.  Children are able to explore new ideas, practise and develop skills and challenge themselves, ably supported by the Early Years staff in both the Nursery and Reception classes.  Learning is planned around key topics that change at least once every half term and is further enhanced by visitors and visits and special events.  Environments both inside and outside the classroom are carefully planned and resourced to reflect the topic as well as provide continuous access to key activities that support the children in all areas of learning, enabling them to make good progress towards the Early Learning Goals and beyond.

The statutory Framework for the EYFS can be found in:- The Early Year Adopter Framework PDF

How to support your child at home: This is a great document that has been produced to map out the first five years of a child’s learning and development journey. It will give you ideas and guidance about what you can typically expect your child to be able to do at different milestones and offers practical suggestions to support their development at home.
