Maths
At Spindle Point, we believe that mathematics is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
We deliver our mathematics curriculum through the Singapore Mastery teaching programme: Maths No Problem. This allows pupils to build their mathematical understanding of key concepts through ‘focus tasks’, often presented as ‘real life’ problems, exploring possibilities, making links to other areas and skills of mathematics, developing fluency and independence.
We further supplement ‘Maths No Problem’, with the use of targeted green pen challenges, often written to revisit previous learning and ensure key skills and knowledge are retained; The use of a whole school mental maths practise programme with layered rewards (initially focusing on times tables); Learning By Questions (LBQ) App to ensure key knowledge and skills from maths lessons are embedded and to be used as an intervention to close any gaps that may arise; TT Rock stars to encourage rapid recall of fundamental times tables; Flashback 4 from White Rose, these provide pupils with a further opportunity to revisit prior learning and Keystone maths reasoning activities whereby children carry out reasoning and problem solving activities linked to other areas of the curriculum such as geography, history and science, often using key people from these subjects and developing cultural capital.
