LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT

Spanish
At Spindle Point we have chosen to deliver Spanish as our modern foreign language. This was decided based on discussions with local high schools, parents, staff and pupils. We wanted our MFL offer to be more than just learning a language in KS2. We want our children to be immersed in the culture of other Spanish speaking countries throughout their education at Spindle Point and starting in the Early Years. Whilst formal MFL language lessons are only taught in KS2, we are producing a curriculum offer that starts in Nursery and progresses through EYFS and KS1. In addition to this we are planning to raise the awareness of Spanish speaking countries, cultures and communities throughout immersions days during the year.
We use ‘Linguastars’ curriculum to deliver the language aspects of the curriculum. All staff have received training to deliver this curriculum in September 2024.
The Linguastars Curriculum provides all aspects of language learning for KS2. Vocabulary, phonics and grammar is embedded into every aspect of our topics, ensuring steady progression through KS2 to KS3 and beyond.
2024 is the first year of teaching Spanish at Spindle Point. As such, all children in Y3 – Y6 will start on Level 1 ‘Los Basicos’. They will then complete Level 1: ‘Mi familia’ and finally level 1 ‘Los mascotas’.
Level 2 will be completed in 2025, revisiting and building on the learning in Level 1.
Teachers are supported in the delivery of the programme through interactive lessons and videos presented by Spanish speaking experts.
